All the very best! ;)

TEAM EXPERIENCES

“It was a new and refreshing change while we gained insight about editing the contributions from the students. We could have done better if the entire student fraternity showed enhanced response to The Creative Corner. As the Convenor, I learnt how to organize events and work as a team.
I hope The Creative Corner receives much more encouragement from the students as well as the teachers across various departments. Overall, it was a fun learning experience with Pankaj and Vivek joining hands for the success of The Creative Corner!”

-NARAYAN KULKARNI
Convenor, English Club

“Working for three years with the wall magazine, it was inspiring and wonderful to associate with new teams and develop creative ideas. Selected as an ‘Editor’ this year, my experience was satisfactory; having come across various talent works of English Literature. Most of all, what remains close to my heart is contributing for The Creative Corner.

My favourite edition was the one dedicated to the Visual Arts. I wish my successors an even better run with The Creative Corner and hope they learn and enjoy what they do!”

-VIVEK. M.V.
Editor, The Creative Corner

“The Creative Corner team is supportive, hard-working and truly believes in its collective passion for literature. It has been a learning experience for me, on that I shall remember.”

-SHIVANI NAIK
Editor, The Creative Corner

“It is degree of freedom given by the teachers that I would like to highlight as having nurtured creativity in The Creative Corner editorial team. My two years of experience as a member of the Editorial Team has taught me the merits of promoting original thought! The satisfaction that I have derived out of seeing a contributor so proudly sharing his/her contribution with others has been unmatched.
The learning during my tenures has been a life-enriching one even as I had the privilege of being a witness to the creative process. I wish The Creative Corner even greater success in times to come!”

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH: ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT 2011-12

The Department of English has ever been encouraging the students to exhibit their best and nurtures them at the same time. With the same intention, the academic year of 2011-2012 began with the election of the student council for the English Club and The Creative Corner under the able guidance of Prof. Rekha Rai and Dr. R. V. Sheela respectively.
The combined strength of all the three years elected the following students in the following positions for ‘The Creative Corner’- a popular wall magazine managed by the department:
1.       Editor-In-Chief         - Pankaj A. Desai              [3rd year, B.A.]
2.       Sub-Editor               - Vivek M.V.                     [3rd year, B.A.]
3.       Sub-Editor               - Chetan Kumar              [3rd year, B.A.]
4.       Editor                       - Manoj Jain                    [2nd year, B.A.]
5.       Editor                       - Shivani Naik                  [1st year, B.A.]
For the ‘English Club’, the following students were nominated by the congregation:
1.     Convenor                            - Narayan Kulkarni      [3rd year, B.A.]
2.     Co-ordinator (2nd year)     - Sadhana S.                [2nd year, B.A.]
3.     Co-ordinator (1st year)       - Anuraga                     [1st  year, B.A.]

This year THE CREATIVE CORNER found a new identity with the online edition getting its own domain at www.mescreativeconer.in! Now, the online portal hosts the entire volume of contributions from the year 2010 onwards!
‘The Creative Corner’ set the ball rolling with the publishing of the 1st edition in the month of September which encompassed topics like ‘The son of a revolution’ and inquired ‘Is English killing the vernacular?’. The 16th of September, saw the launch of the CREATIVE CARNIVAL- an intra-collegiate literary fest, which even inspired the teachers to come forward and participate! What more could one have asked for!

The seminar hall was jam packed for a talk by Radio Jockey Sreeja Mohan of FM RAINBOW which was encouragingly interactive, with the students loving every moment of their interaction with her. She said it best when she said, "It is not old fashioned to be nice. A sense of responsibility is a prime asset not only for a Radio Jockey but for all professions."
The English Club enthused the students and teachers alike with the screening of the Dev Anand classic ‘Guide’ which was based on the text prescribed for the final year students. Releasing just in time for the festival of Deepawali, the 2nd edition was published in October with the tag line ‘The world as I see it today’ which brought up corruption related issues to the fore.
The even semester started with quite some excitement! Promoting the theme of ‘The Social Awakening’ which could only be conceived of as a happening not later or elsewhere but ‘right here, right now’, ‘WRITE HERE, WRITE NOW!’ in its second edition was an event to cherish on the 16th of February, 2012!

With events like Pic-n-speak, Product launch, Press release, Photography, Poetry translation and recitation, Street play, Poetry review, Cartooning, Editorial and Mock-press conference, ‘WRITE HERE, WRITE NOW!’ 2012 drew in enthused participants from more than 12 colleges from across Bangalore! The highlight of the day’s programme was a talk on ‘Language and Media’ by Mr. G.N. Mohan- the Editor-In-Chief of Samaya TV and also the Chief Guest and the speaker for the day.

He emphasized the need for an education system that was more hands-on than theoretical and that which was awake to the needs of the world around!

The 3rd edition of THE CREATIVE CORNER was special in the sense that it showcased the best in visual creativity with the least emphasis on the usage of words. This edition was dedicated to the Visual arts of Cartooning and Photography received as entries for the inter-collegiate competition. The 4th edition was dedicated jointly to ‘Editorial Writing’ and the art of writing a ‘Press release’. The students displayed sufficient maturity while dealing with controversial topics like ‘The porngate of Vidhana Soudha’ and ‘measures taken by the Railways to strengthen security at the stations’. Coming as the final edition for the academic year 2011-12, the 5th edition showcased the unity in diversity of ideas. Through the medium of ‘Poetry Review’, the edition brought forth the variety in perspectives and the innovation in thought processes of the contributors.

With this The Department of English concluded an academic year which saw a plethora of activities being conducted by the vibrant student team under the able guidance of the supportive faculty members. From here, it is only a matter of sustained interests and efforts that will see THE CREATIVE CORNER settling deeper into the hearts of the student community in a way that it further encourages them to be pioneers of original and creative thought!

INTIMATE MUSINGS 5TH EDITION

EDITORIAL- 5TH EDITION 2011-2012

The 4th edition as many of you might have noticed was released under the editorship of one the talented and dedicated of our lot here at MES – Shivani Naik of 1st year, B.A. It was our earnest effort to promote young talent even within our ranks here in the Editorial team. I hope this tradition of excellence only continues from here on.
Coming as the 5th and final edition of THE CREATIVE CORNER for the academic year 2011-12, I am proud to present before you a ‘brave’ edition dedicated to poetry translation. I call it ‘brave’ as it may portray thoughts apparently similar in nature. Yet, it has been our constant endeavour to promote plurality in original thinking in seemingly repetitive generes.
This edition is also a tribute to the Kannada poets Kuvempu and P.T Narasimhachar whose original poems in Kannada have been intricately translated into Hindi by our very own Prof. Manjushri Menon of the Department of Hindi. These poems in Kannada and Hindi were then translated by the young participants into English and are in the form that we present before you now. Stringing together their own thoughts with those of the original poems, they have successfully played wordsmiths!
I hope that you will appreciate and love the efforts of the young poets just as much as we here at THE CREATIVE CORNER loved presenting them to you.
Do check out these posts at the online edition of THE CREATIVE CORNER at : www.mescreativecorner.in and do leave behind your comments and suggestions.

THE FACE OF NIGHT

As the sun sinks down in the west ocean
and as the brightness fades
The whole world changes in
Its own vision
When the planets, moon and stars
share their attention

Can only the earth show out its
Beauty? No!!
Even the Darkness can show out
Its beauty
When the day hides its reality
The night serves the purpose
The earth lies low when the
Sky is beneficient.

As the light brings life
and the dark brings death
The life gives pride and death
brings cry
Is our lives so blind, that we can’t face death, As the
sun sinks down in the
west ocean
and as the brightness fades
In every Mansion

“THAT TREE”

Absorbing the slush and mud, I felt
Beautiful flowers bloom up till the sky,
I derive my nutrition from my roots,
I am the substance of the heal thy flowers

Burning sun turns the earth barren,
It sucks water from the small plants,
At the time I spread greenery,
I fight with the flames of the sun,
and spread calm and relaxing shade.

Throughout dawn I stand alone uncovered,
I give everything that I can offer.
Even during the deep darkness,
I stay by every single person who needs me.

Neither am I a great personality nor small,
Nor do I have a life of my own.
Neither am I harmful to someone,
Nor do I expect anything in return

I provide everything that is necessary,
Give, giving, given, One day I will be dead
I am a fragrance that will remain even when
I am no more,
Unlike you who will die and the stink of your death
will remain lingering around
forever and ever

A TREE

I absorb sewage water
I bloom flowers nearing to sky
I utilize the dirt under the tree as my food
I give up fruits on top

The earth is dried due to spring
You bring new leaves and be bright
I behave like a roof in hot summer
Make the ground cool

I become dried due to snow to winter
I stand naked by making all my leaves fall
In autumn I don’t give a single leaf
to thunder or any spirit

I am not dirty, or not untidy
I am not living for myself
I don’t trouble anyone
I don’t have any help from anyone

I fulfill others need
I die by serving others
I don’t smell even if I die
You stink if you die

DREAMING ABOUT FUTURE

My heart is dreaming
about my forthcoming days

What ever the obstacles
come in my dream
Nothing can hold it
or destroy it, instead
it would shine like a
evergreen forests.

My dreams will never
die also it will be
like a humming bird

Wore is worship for the
poor peoples, who are
not affordable for their
daily bases…!

But they never think about
their poverty and feel sad for it.
Leaving every pressure and
tension, I will lead
a happy and wonderful
days with them.

A DREAM OF TOMORROW

My heart sees a dream of a forthcoming tomorrow

Far away on the banks of the river,
Where nothing and no one can reach us ever.
Away from the people who give us sorrow,
Where birds and animals reside in a sacred forest so narrow

Consider your heart to be a temple,
Where you live each day.
Spend each day of your life,
in such a peaceful place

DREAM OF TOMORROW

The images my minds eye, I see
The dreams of tomorrow

Far away on the river bank
Lies a beautiful forest-a have for birds and animals

Here nothing can harm us
We are safe from malevolent company

Let nature be your worship
A place where everyone can co-exist
Free from worries and united with nature
I will spend my day here.

THE NIGHT

As the sun sets in the sea of the west,
The earth is also immersed in the darkness;

Then can be seen a whole new world emerge,
filled with the brilliance of the planets,
the moon and the star!

What if the earth shows light in all the four directions?
Darkness also shines brightly till far-far away!

The wealth which the day hides is brought
to light by the darkness;

The sky acquires much more glory and
grandeur than the earth!

Life is like light,
death is like darkness!

The world is brought to light by life,
death is the glittering greatness of immortality!
Is life visionless?? Does death have a magnificent vision?

TOMORROW’S DREAM

My Heart Dreams and Dreams about Tomorrow
far, faraway on the bank of a river
Where no rumours can reach
Come away, away from those leading a futile and
fruitless life
To a beautiful, holy jungle, where birds- animals reside

Take the hut, to be a temple
There, where reside the poor
Away from worries, united I shall stay
Reside and spend a day.

THE JOY OF LIVING: 3RD PLACE CREATIVE WRITING

When I entered my name in the list of people who would be participating in the Creative Writing competition, my close friend said, “Joy of Living! It’s a nice topic. What are you going to write about?” I said, “The topic is ‘Joy of Living’, so I’ll write about that.” My friend said, “You know it means you have to talk about the joy of ‘Living’ right?” “Yes, I know!” He said, “Prepare well, and write well.” I said, “Thanks”.

I went home and asked my dad, “I need your help in writing an article on the topic, ‘Joy of Living’.” He asked me, “What are you planning to write?” “When they spoke of the topic, they said it’s just about the joy of ‘Living’. As in living opposed to just existing”.

“Ah! So write that the joy of Living comes from waking up early in the morning, going for a jog, exercising, eating ‘little’ breakfast, and most importantly going to college on time.”

“Pa, I said Joy of Living. I didn’t ask for your source of joy,” I retorted.

After sometime as I was still wondering what to write, I thought to myself. To my dad, who is fit and fine, the joy of working out, staying healthy, and of course taunting his daughter about her size, was indeed Joy.

It was in these minute jokes and statements that he made, he found joy.

That is when I realized, it was his way of living life up. Because, this is not a once-in-a-blue-moon act that my dad plays, but it’s a routine. This is a part and parcel of his daily life. It is his way of enjoying his moments. It is his style of fun, and though my mother and I frown at his digs at us, he laughs heartily.

Living and Joy, two words that could be well complimenting to a person, and yet they could be contrasting words to another.

What does one do to ‘live’ in today’s world? By ‘live’ I don’t mean to exist, I mean to enjoy, loosening up, to rejuvenate, and simply just to refresh him/her.

This article would, when eyed with just a mind bound by chains of work, stress and duties, not look beautiful but look at it with an open heart. It is a joy to live, or even to exist in such a world.

To experience the beauty of this world, one has to ‘LIVE’ and not just ‘live’.

And to ‘LIVE’, one must not only work hard, but also enjoy.

One must see the good in even the worst situations. “And how should that happen?” you may ask.

A simple example- The other day, a friend of mine and I were going through the busy streets of Bangalore for some work. We had to ask for directions every few minutes to get to the right place. The roads were narrow and not to forget buried in dirt and covered with potholes. My friend said, “Just imagine how people live in this area. They have practically grown up here. And still look at them, sitting happily, doing their chores, without getting affected by any of this. We must seriously be thankful to God to have given us something that is so much better than this.”

That is how life goes. With what one has, one can never be satisfied and we always desire for more. But one look at their lives and you realise how much fun you have missed out in your life, cribbing for more.

I must say this was one point that made me realize the essence of the life I have got. Not everybody is lucky enough to get this life.

The life that you have got is precious and it is not given to you, for you to crib about every minute.

There is joy in everything that takes place around you. You just cease to notice it.

Living by itself is Joy. Living for your parents is Joy, living with parents is joy; living a life with friends, family, soul mate, siblings, pet, strangers, enemies all fitted into one piece is nothing but Joy.

But how does one “LIVE”? Like it’s mentioned above, everything has something joyous about it which people cease to notice.
To “LIVE”, one needs to think positively, be optimistic and enjoy any work given to them.

Enjoy every bit of work, play, time and you will LIVE your life. This way not only do you enjoy life but you can learn better.

So the next time there is something tough in front of you, think, “Oh! How fun to do this! It’s tough, so it’ll need hard work, which means, if I can complete it I’ll get praised! Wow! Isn’t that fun?”

VARSHA VARDHARAJAN

JOY OF LIVING: 2ND PLACE CREATIVE WRITING

“Life is all about living” we may have heard this quote in various forms. But what is living all about? These days, living only means mere subsistence. Existing, breathing for the heck of it: laughing because its “appropriate”, talking because its “required”…Do we do anything at all, because “WE” want do it for “OURSELVES”? All our actions and reactions somehow are adhering to the social norms- what the whole world feels is right. Amidst all the stress and all the tension, we simply have forgotten that there is more to life than just respiring, working, eating and sleeping (of course, the last one is a luxury, more than a need).

Happiness is the fundamental right of everyday- every single living thing. Everyone deserves to be happy, but the sad truth is that happiness- real happiness is often confounded with materialistic, momentary joy.

We don’t need an exotic holiday at Macau or a vacation spent fishing in Caribbean islands to be happy. We can relax on our own bed, take a break from all the work (and studies) with a good book, some great music, a bag of chips and a bottle of soda and still be happy.

Sometimes eating corn on the roadside with our loved ones is more satisfying than a dinner with people you ‘need’ to know, in the most ‘happening’ restaurant. Little things in life may not seem so important to us now, but one day, when we look back, we shall realize that those were the big things. We must learn how to live life without regrets, for regrets have this nasty habit of ruining the pleasure of the moment.

As my brother once told me, “ Life is not about wanting to arrive at your grave in a well presented body, but it is about arriving there with scratches, cuts and bruises all over you; yet with a smile that says that you have “lived” your life and are proud of your scars. “If we truly want to be happy, we must accept ourselves for who we really are- with our flaws. We must also learn how to accept other people’s flaws and realize that everybody is different and they don’t have to like or dislike the same thing as we do. We have to know that it is alright if someone doesn’t like us; after all, its not like we love all the people who walk amidst us( I found this in a book and it made so much sense that I felt I had to put it down)! As the writer I’m so in awe of, Fyodor Dostoevsky stated, “To love someone means to see him the way God intends us to.” It simply means accepting people for who they really are!

Poet Albert Camus wrote, “In the dead of winter I realize, that within me is an invincible summer.” We really are strong, strong enough to set out on the quest for happiness and battle any hurdle that we may encounter. But a simple thing we forget is to enjoy the journey, savoring every moment of it, appreciating the mistakes we make along the way for what they really are- precious lessons that had to be learned the hard way- loving people worth being with, taking chances, having fun! We are so caught up with our destination that we forget the journey!

“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s all about dancing in the rain.”

We cannot simply sit huddled in a corner whining endlessly about the various torments we had to endure or will have to endure. I mean, LIFE IS TOO DAMN SHORT FOR THAT! If we want to be happy, we must learn to let go our inhibitions and remember that happy times will soon come! We must know that every problem comes with a solution and that the problems will pass.

“The happiest people aren’t the ones who get the best of everything. They are the ones who make the best of everything,” says my brother. Everything in life will not go as per our wishes; anything that can go wrong will go wrong. We must know not freak out and mope, but simply do the next best thing! Life is simple indeed but we complicate it and put up wrong directions on the highway to happiness (highways are always straight and simple) and turn the whole voyage into hide-and-seek through an endless maze! Happiness is within us and we look everywhere but inside our own selves!

In the end, “It’s not the years in your life that counts, but the life in your years!”

Meghana Kiran

JOY OF HAPPINESS: 1ST PLACE CREATIVE WRITING

Look out through the window of pain,
Into the greener Pasture of Life,
For what God is given is a pathway,
Into the Unknowns of life.

Look into the world,
Where the oceans roar at its night.
Calmly I stand at the Beach,
And feel the waves hit Me light.

Lost inside My consciousness,
Lost in the happiness of Light.
My eyes spread a tear,
Thinking of the joy of Happiness in life.

The silent wind that blows into the Darkness of the Night
Enlightened My life,
For I have found happiness,
In the small things of life.

Far above the cloudy Mountains,
That strike with its Height.
For Nature is at its Beauty,
The Soberness of a Happy Sight.

I look at Myself and learn the secret of Life.
For the secret lies within ourselves,
to find the happiness of life.

HIGH COURT TELLS CENTRE TO FILE REPORT ON GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK.

In recent trends, words like Google and Facebook are being liberally used by the youth. Google being the most used internet search engine and a multi-giant corporation which includes Gmail and YouTube has contributed a lot to the nation.  Google and Facebook are popular social networking websites among the current generation.
In today’s scenario, social networks like Facebook have become an addiction among almost all age groups. Like each and every aspect has positive and negative parts, likewise social networks like Facebook has both positive and negative aspects on its user.
In recent times, all social networking sites consist of adulterated obscene material not suitable for any users. At the same time our honourable education minister Mr. Kapil Sibal showed concern about obscene words or materials which are being used against many prominent people of our nation. According to him, India is a land of its own culture and diversity however, social networking sites are making us follow western trends- just like the phrase “monkey see monkey do”. But being youngistanis, we think there should be a proper platform to express our views and opinions. Even to promote awareness about news and events that happen around us.
Since India is a democratic nation, each and every common comrade has the right to express his opinion in any way. So we do not think that social networking sites like Google and Facebook should be banned.
And last but not the least, we would like to end by saying that changes should happen among individuals and their thought, and not in the rules and regulations which are implemented on us. Change should bring positive aspects in rules and not restrict the freedom of people through new media like Google and Facebook.

PRESS RELEASE 2

RAILWAYS TAKE MEASURES TO STRENGHTEN SECURITY IN STATIONS

Railways have already taken certain security measures in various departments and in the railway stations. They are:
Ø Platform tickets: Each person, male or female, who isn’t travelling by train, must hold platform tickets. In case a person without a platform ticket is found he/she will be charged a penalty of Rs.300 under the government rule.

Ø Security checks: Security has come up with devices like the metal detector. Bomb squads and sniffer dogs are also available.

Ø Railway department: In the trains, especially the women’s compartment where most incidents occur, an individual policeman has been stationed.

Hence these are the safety measures taken in the railway station.
Measures to strengthen security in stations:
Ø Due to major attacks in different places such as Mumbai and Gujarat, terrorists easily get in with the intention of spreading violence in the place. Police should take the following measures: check all forms which are available at all Edmonton police service, divisional and community stations.

Ø At any place it should be made sure that passengers are travelling to the right place with personal identification proof and ticket.

There should be:
·        Legal agreement to provide potable drinking water facility and sanitation to about 1.84 million people.
·        Facilities for women, men and families should be separate in case of misbehavior.
·        Any member of the department of defence-not just senior leaders- can become a target for terrorists. The purpose of this memorandum is to provide general guidance to many members and their families on how to avoid acts of terrorism, as well as to provide basic instructions in events when people become victims of a terrorist act.
Precaution: Attitude towards security is most important. Although some of these precautions are applicable overseas, you can decrease your chances of becoming a terrorist target, as well as those of your family members by taking the precautions listed in this appendix. It is highly recommended that you share this information with each member of your family. It is also suggested that you and your family review these precautions on a regular basis.
Ø Encourage security awareness in your family, friends and people.
Ø Be alert for surveillance attempts or suspicious persons.
Ø Report them to proper authorities, trust your gut feeling.
Ø Keep a low profile, avoid publicity. Do not flash large sums of money.
Ø Do not unnecessarily reveal your home address, phone number or family information.
Ø Do not carry sensitive items or embarrassing ones.
