FOREIGN; I never paid much attention to the meaning of this word
Until I found myself in a totally different world.
So far away from family and friends and with strangers all around
I seek a little bit of solace
And won’t rest until it’s found.
The language I speak and the one I now hear
Are light years apart.
Even when I speak slow, steady English they cannot
Understand me and that’s the funny part.
I walk through the crowded streets enduring never-ending stares
And baffled glares, ‘West Indies!’ some shout.
I take refreshments where people stand as they eat
And I ride the bus in which there’s never an empty seat.
At night I call home hoping to hear a familiar voice once more
Only to be disconnected due to insufficient funds
And I’m left missing them more and more and more.
In the end there’s truly no place like home
And as for lovers left behind
All I can say is ‘Kiss me through the phone’.
The rain is soothing, it reminds me of home
Whereas the cold makes me feel more alone.
Talk about the food, delicious and colourful
But a little…..okay, A lot hot!
Can I complete a meal without a jug of water in hand?
I think not!
New friends I make everyday
The gorgeous girls…I simply can’t stay away!
And yet every day they forget my answer
To their question: ‘Why is your hair like that nah?’
And so I smile and simply reply: ‘Why is yours like that…nah?’
Blessed I feel to have my fellow countrymen and women with me
Always supporting me nd encouraging each other to be the best that we can be.
It all comes back to searching for a piece of home- away from home
So as to feel a little less alone.
At the end of a very long day
Upon my not-so-soft bed I will lay
With my mind’s eye I will envision
Times that are near and times that are far;
As I search the skyscrapped sky
For a tiny shooting star.
I will think to myself, ‘Why not send a postcard to all you hold dear?’
Because I truly wish they were near
I truly wish they were here
To help me feel a little less FOREIGN!
